Firefighters in Cyprus were battling a massive wildfire on Wednesday that forced the evacuation of at least four villages. The blaze erupted as a severe heatwave gripped the country, sending temperatures soaring.

Authorities reported the fire was burning through rugged terrain north of Limassol, a city in the southern part of the island. Fueled by high temperatures and strong winds, the flames caused significant damage to several homes, according to fire service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, who spoke to state broadcaster CyBC.

The wildfire began around midday, prompting a swift response from six fire engines dispatched from Limassol city and surrounding districts. Additional support came from the Forestry Department and organized volunteer groups. In total, 14 aircraft were deployed to fight the flames from the air.

As the fire threatened to spread, Cyprus activated the “ICAROS II” aerial firefighting plan, bringing in six more aircraft, including help from the British Bases. For public safety, police closed roads between Malia–Omodos and Malia–Arsos.

The intense heat added to the challenges, with inland temperatures reaching 43°C (109.4°F) on Wednesday. Authorities issued an amber weather alert
