There's a potential for a courtesy meeting between BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who is currently visiting the UK as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. Maruf Kamal Khan, former press secretary to Khaleda Zia, announced on his Facebook account moments ago that top BNP leader Tarique Rahman will pay a courtesy call on Muhammad Yunus. Tarique Rahman will meet with Dr. Yunus on the morning of June 13. The duration of the meeting is not yet known.It known this meeting take place in Dr. Yunus's hotel lobby.
Khan further wrote, "I consider this good news. Those who desire conflict are ignorant, reckless, self-serving, or engaged for harmful special purposes. I want Yunus-Tarique interaction for national interest. Let this understanding grow, and may it benefit the nation."
He informed this correspondent that "everything is stated in that status update."
It's believed that this meeting could improve the relationship, despite recent apparent tensions between the government and the BNP.
BNP Softens Stance on Dr. Yunus at Khaleda Zia's Behest
Don't join in the fight of ego and arrogance," she advised. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has reportedly retreated from its previously rigid stance regarding Dr. Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government, following the intervention of party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
Sources indicate that Khaleda Zia has advised senior party leaders against engaging in conflict with the Yunus-led government. She offered this counsel on Saturday (June 7), the night of Eid, when senior leaders, including members of the standing committee, visited her to extend greetings.
"There's no benefit for the BNP in clashing with the government," the BNP chairperson reportedly told the leaders.
According to reliable sources, a standing committee meeting was convened on Monday (June 9) night in response to the BNP chairperson's advice. During this meeting, Khaleda Zia's views were discussed in detail. Following this discussion, the party decided to step back from its hardline position and also deliberated on a potential meeting between Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Dr. Yunus. She urged them to remember whether the BNP's goal was to engage in conflict with others or to win as many seats as possible in the election. She stressed the importance of remembering that the people are on BNP's side.
