Three sisters seriously injured in a major motorway crash in County Kildare have said they are “taking things one day at a time” as they continue their recovery.
Ella Hendricken, Niamh Kinsella and Alma Kinsella, who are in their 20s and 30s, were seriously injured alongside a young boy when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision last month. The family had been travelling towards Dublin Airport for a holiday when the crash happened.
Five teenagers travelling in the other vehicle died in the collision. The teenagers were identified as Joe Carthy, Jack Kennedy, Alex McCarthy, Jeremy O’Brien and Kamil Pustkowski. Their funerals were held in the days after the crash.
The three sisters have now shared an update on their recovery, thanking people for the messages, donations and support they have received since the crash.
In a joint message, they said they were continuing to take each day as it came and were becoming stronger as time passed.
The family also thanked everyone who had donated to a GoFundMe fundraiser, shared the appeal, sent messages or kept them in their thoughts.
A friend of one of the injured women started the fundraiser to help the family following the serious collision. It has now raised more than €820,000.
The sisters said the support had meant a great deal to them and their family during what they described as an extremely difficult few weeks.
The sisters said their main focus for now is recovering from their injuries and becoming stronger.
They expressed particular thanks to members of the public who had supported the fundraiser and helped spread their message.
Their statement said: “We are continuing to take things one day at a time and are getting stronger as the days go by.”
They also thanked people for their “kindness, messages and support” and said the generosity shown towards their family had been overwhelming.
The sisters ended their message by saying they would continue to focus on their recovery and take each day as it comes.
The crash also resulted in the deaths of five teenagers who were travelling in the other vehicle.
Joe Carthy, Jack Kennedy, Alex McCarthy, Jeremy O’Brien and Kamil Pustkowski were killed in the collision.
Their deaths led to a series of funerals attended by family members, friends and members of their communities.
The crash has affected both families, with the three sisters and the young boy continuing to recover while the families of the five teenagers mourn their deaths.
The circumstances surrounding the collision have also prompted continued attention in Ireland, particularly because of the number of young people who lost their lives.
The GoFundMe campaign set up for the injured family has received widespread support.
More than €820,000 has been raised, with donations coming from people who wanted to help the family during their recovery.
The sisters have now publicly acknowledged those donations and the many people who shared the fundraising appeal.
