A sophisticated London-based criminal gang, responsible for a dangerous operation that smuggled migrants both into and out of the UK, has been dismantled by the National Crime Agency (NCA). On Thursday, seven members of the illicit network were jailed at Isleworth Crown Court, bringing the total number of convictions to twelve. The ring’s brazen activities included packing terrified individuals into lorry trailers for perilous cross-Channel journeys, with one shocking video recovered by investigators showing desperate migrants screaming for help from inside a locked vehicle.

The mastermind behind the operation, 41-year-old Algerian national Azize Benaniba, received a substantial sentence of 12 years and 11 months. Benaniba and his co-conspirators initially facilitated the entry of migrants, primarily of North African origin, into the UK using tourist visas. Once in Britain, the cruel twist in their scheme emerged: these same individuals were then forced into cramped lorry trailers in attempts to smuggle them back into France via Dover. Each person was charged a staggering fee of up to ÂŁ1,200 for these dangerous crossings.

"Doing the Government's Job"? The Gang's Cynical Defence

During the prosecution, Rebecca Austin revealed the gang's audacious and cynical defence: they claimed they "were simply doing the Government's job for them by transporting migrants out of Britain into France." This startling assertion was echoed by Judge Giles Curtis-Raleigh, who, despite the gang's claims, underscored the gravity of their actions.

"This was an extremely serious conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration to a member state," Judge Curtis-Raleigh stated, adding, "This was a long-lived conspiracy over eight months, encompassing 20 events."

The investigation, led by the NCA, uncovered chilling evidence of the inhumane conditions endured by the migrants. Videos found on the phone of one of the ringleaders, reportedly filmed by a migrant being smuggled, depicted the horrifying reality within the locked trailers. Migrants were subjected to perilous journeys, crammed into confined spaces, with little regard for their safety or well-being.

A Ruthless Operation with Fatal Potential

John Turner, NCA senior investigating officer, condemned the gang's actions, emphasizing their callous disregard for human life. "These smugglers had no care for the safety or wellbeing of the people they crammed into lorry trailers – their only concern was making money," Turner stated. He also highlighted the broader, tragic consequences of such illicit activities.

"We've seen the fatal consequences of this crime type, as migrants have sadly lost their lives being smuggled across borders on land and at sea," he added, referring to the inherent risks involved in clandestine transportation.

The gang's operation was sophisticated, demonstrating a clear understanding of logistics and a ruthless pursuit of profit. Their ability to manage both inbound and outbound smuggling, using the UK as a transit point or even a holding area before attempting to move migrants back to Europe, paints a grim picture of the complex web of organised immigration crime. The substantial sentences handed down serve as a stark warning to others engaged in this dangerous and exploitative trade. The NCA continues its relentless efforts to disrupt and dismantle such networks, protecting vulnerable individuals from those who seek to profit from their desperation.
