Intense rainfall and subsequent flooding in Pakistan's north-west region have led to a devastating natural disaster, resulting in over 300 fatalities. Local authorities confirmed the death toll on Saturday, with rescue and relief operations underway. Emergency funds have been released to assist in the efforts to clear blocked roads and help those affected.

The monsoon season's most severe spell this year has been marked by a series of destructive events, including cloud bursts, flash floods, lightning strikes, landslides, and building collapses. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority reported that by Saturday morning, 307 people had been confirmed dead in the mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with more individuals still missing.

The severe weather has also impacted neighboring countries, including India and Nepal, which have experienced heavy rains and flooding in the past week.

Buner district was one of the hardest-hit areas in Pakistan, with 184 reported deaths. Local officials noted extensive damage to infrastructure, crops, and orchards. A cloud burst, along with flash floods and fallen trees, swept away people and their belongings. Rescue efforts are ongoing in Buner, where 93 bodies have been recovered and some people, including women and children, are still trapped by floodwaters.

In the Shangla area, 34 people died after a building's roof collapsed during the downpour. Provincial Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah stated that local officials are supervising relief efforts and assessing the damage. Medical camps are being set up for the victims, and cooked meals are being provided to families who lost their homes. Heavy machinery will be used to clear and repair roads.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that both civilian and military teams are involved in the rescue and relief operations, with the prime minister having convened an emergency meeting. In a social media statement, Mr. Dar extended his sympathies to the victims' families, the injured, and those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

Adding to the tragedy, a rescue helicopter crashed on Friday due to bad weather, killing all five crew members on board. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue until August 21.
