Neymar Tests Positive for COVID-19

Brazilian forward Neymar has been sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19, as confirmed by Santos Football Club in a statement reported by Brazilian media.

The 33-year-old player started showing symptoms on Thursday and was immediately isolated from team activities. Following medical tests, the club announced on Saturday that Neymar has contracted the virus.

This diagnosis comes at a crucial time for Santos, who are preparing for their final league match before the Brazilian Serie A pauses for the Club World Cup in the United States from June 14 to July 13. The club did not specify the duration of Neymar's absence due to the infection.

Initially suspended for an upcoming match against Fortaleza, Neymar's absence has now been extended due to COVID-19, presenting additional challenges for the team.

Neymar's contract with Santos expires on June 30, raising uncertainty about his future with the club. He has faced a season marred by injuries, limiting him to 12 appearances across all competitions with three goals and three assists.

With the Brazilian league halting after the Fortaleza game, Santos will need to regroup for the Club World Cup without their key forward.

Struggling in the league with just two wins in 11 matches, Santos currently occupies the 18th position in the standings, inside the relegation zone.
