A murder investigation has been launched after a 52-year-old man died following an alleged assault in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to South Parade at around 01:00 BST on Saturday, 26 September, following reports of an assault. Officers found the man unconscious at the scene.
He was taken to hospital for treatment but later died.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody for questioning.
Detectives from Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
Detective Chief Inspector Claire Brennan said the incident was a deeply distressing event and that the thoughts of police were with the man's family and loved ones.
Specially trained officers are supporting the family while detectives work to establish what happened before and during the reported assault.
Police have not released the identity of the man.
Greater Manchester Police is appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant footage to come forward.
Investigators are particularly interested in CCTV recordings, mobile phone footage and dashcam recordings that could help establish the sequence of events.
Members of the public who were in the South Parade area around the time of the incident may have information that could assist the investigation.
Police acknowledged that the incident may cause concern among people living and working in the Rochdale area.
Detective Chief Inspector Brennan said a dedicated team of detectives was working to establish the full circumstances and understand what happened in the moments leading up to the man's death.
The two arrested men remain in custody while enquiries continue. Their arrest does not mean they have been charged with an offence.
